Winter Fun at the Library

The Winter Reading Program (WRP) has officially begun and you know what that means? It’s time to reveal the names of our library Gnomes! Voting took place last week and the chosen names are… LuLu and Patrick Gnahomes! They’ll be with us all Winter and will be participating in the Winter Reading Program themselves. Stop by the library to pick up your Winter Reading Program Passport to begin earning stickers for fun prizes! The WRP will end on January 4th, 2020, so you have plenty of time to read lots of books! Do you think you can read more books than Patrick and LuLu?

We had such Fun with Mrs. Claus last year that she decided to come back to the library! We can’t wait to see her again! This event REQUIRES registration as space is limited. Avoid disappointment by signing up now through our online calendar at lansingkslibrary.org to save your spot.

The monthly programs are still scheduled for December. Bedtime Storytime will be on Wednesday, December 4th at 6pm. Bring the kids by in their pajamas to sing some songs and hear a cozy bedtime story. The next Toddler Time will be on December 7th at 10:30am! Upcoming Library Programming

As the Lansing Community Library comes to the end of summer and events are wrapping up, we will need to make some unexpected adjustments. The library recently had a long-time volunteer retire who assisted with shelving, keeping the collections straight, and helped with other projects. She volunteered about 30 hours a week at the library. This retirement moves up my need to evaluate the library’s programming. This evaluation is an important piece of keeping the library on track with its mission and goals and has been on my list of things to do. With the retirement of our volunteer, this evaluation now takes priority.

Over the last few years, we have added programs to build on past successes. In looking at all the programs offered at the library, I saw we have regular offerings for adults and pre-kindergarten patrons which focus on literacy and creativity. While we had an abundance of pre-kindergarten programming, what stood out was a lack of consistent programming for our school-aged patrons. With that information, I’ve decided to restructure our programming to include these age groups. We will begin offering various programs on different days, at different times, while covering different topics to encourage school-age participation.

In order to accomplish this, beginning September 1, 2019, we will only be offering Storytime on Friday mornings and continue our monthly Saturday Storytime and Toddler Time programs. We will be adding a monthly evening Storytime for families who are unable to attend during the day. We will also add “pop-up” programs beginning in late third quarter 2019 for a variety of ages and interests.

We look forward to continuing serving you and providing a wide variety of learning experiences for patrons of all ages in Lansing. Please share ideas for potential “pop-up” programs with me. I hope this realignment helps to encourage our families to visit the Lansing Community Library more often.

One Book Many Neighbors Tri-County Program

Community reading programs bring people together through a common book. As part of the adult summer reading program, seven area libraries have collaborated on a local program called One Book, Many Neighbors. We have chosen the book One World: A Global Anthology of Short Stories, which examines the many points of view of people from different cultures.

Each library has planned a program around different stories from the anthology. Participants are able to check out the book and pick up a passport to guide them to each program, where they will collect passport stamps to be eligible for a Grand Prize drawing. Participants and their families will be invited to a Summer Finale Party at Cider Hill Family Orchard, with food, prizes, apple picking and other activities. Contact your home library to join our globetrotting book club across Atchison, Leavenworth and Wyandotte Counties.

1. Atchison Public Library: Thursday, June 6 at 6 p.m.  Join a discussion of two stories, one set in an Inuit village in Canada and the other in India, while sipping mango lassies and snacking on Indian finger food.

2. Leavenworth Public Library: Sunday, June 9 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Visit Puerto Rico and view the U.S.A. through the eyes of a West African immigrant. Explore cultural understanding and change with a discussion led by diversity consultant Gene Chávez, Chávez & Associates, Kansas City. Special guests from Puerto Rico, Liberia and Ivory Coast will share their culture, food and music.

3. Lansing Community Library: Tuesday, June 18 at 5:30 p.m. Visit the U.S.A., India, and Australia with a discussion of two stories while sipping ginger lemonade and snacking on finger food.

4. Bonner Springs City Library: Tuesday, June 25 at 5:30 p.m. Visit South Africa and Botswana with two stories which will be read aloud, then followed by a discussion at 6 p.m. and a traditional South African tea. A reader from South Africa will join the discussion via Skype.

5. Basehor Community Library: Tuesday, July 9 at 7 p.m. Visit India and the U.S.A. with a discussion while snacking on traditional Indian desserts, followed by a presentation about the modern immigration experience. Janell N. Avila of the Solorio & Avila Immigration Law Frim about legal immigration today, and Deepti Srinivasan, a local immigrant living in the Kansas City area, will share her immigration experience.

6. Linwood Community Library: Thursday July 18 at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy putting together a delicious banana crumb cake that is traditional to Southern Brazil while we discuss the story. Take it home to bake for a tasty treat! Space is limited for this program, registration required. Call the Linwood Community Library at 913-301-3686 to register.

7. Tonganoxie Community Library: Tuesday, July 23 from 6 to 7 p.m. Visit Bangladesh with a story that will be read aloud, followed by a Skype session with the author. Patrons will also sample traditional food from Bangladesh.

We hope many of you will join our trip around the world (and the tri-county area) in June and July.

New In February at the Library

Our February Master Gardener’s program will be all about Victory Gardens presented by Loretta Craig on Tuesday, February 5 at 4PM. Victory gardens, also called war gardens or food gardens for defense, were vegetable, fruit, and herb gardens planted at private residences and public parks in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Germany during World War I and World War II.  She will talk about the history of Victory Gardens during the wars and why we should do a Vegetable Garden today.

Our monthly Lego Club is back on February 6th! Join us on the first Wednesday of each month at 4pm to have fun with friends. We have the Legos, idea books, and the space. Legos are a wonderful way to excite children about problem solving and innovative thinking.

We are adding a few new monthly Saturday programs for families and children. On Saturday, February 9th at 10:30am we will host our first Family Storytime geared towards preschoolers. Join Miss Debbie as we have fun learning about Valentine’s Day, create mailboxes to receive special Valentine’s Day cards, and sing some songs.

Our new Toddler Time is starting up on February 16th at 10:30am. It is a fun program for babies up to 3-years with the same rhymes and stories you love with added sensory activities. Miss Emily has some squishy fun planned. One of the best ways for children to learn is by watching the grownups around them, so grownups are highly encouraged to fully participate with their child. Keep up to date with the new programs by visiting our website, www.lansingkslibrary.org.

We will be hosting Cote Smith, author of the new novel, Limetime. It is the prequel to the #1 podcast about a teenager who learns of a mysterious research facility where over three hundred people have disappeared—including her uncle—with clues that become the key to discovering the secrets of this strange town. See the trailer here.

Our next Paint & Sip Fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, March 8th. Doors open at 6pm and painting begins at 6:30pm. The Friends of the Library hold these fundraisers to help support the Reading Program events and prizes, Kids Create, and other special events throughout the year. We hope you will join in the fun as we create a fun painting (see below). The Friends will provide snacks for the evening and you can BYOB. Tickets are available online here or by clicking on the picture below.

Finally, the Library Advisory Board wants to hear from you! Have ideas, suggestions for programming or the collection? Want to share your comments? They are hosting a Question & Answer session at the library on Tuesday, February 26th from 5pm to 6:30pm. We hope you can join us as we continue to plan for the future.
