Dear Friends –

As most of you probably know by know, Leavenworth County has been given a “Stay At Home” order by the Leavenworth County Health Department that goes into effect on Tuesday, March 24th and will remain in place until Friday, April 24th. As a result, the library building will close completely as of Tuesday, March 24th in order to comply with this order and help the community prevent the spread of COVID-19.

We will still remain available to answer questions via our library e-mail (library@lansing.ks.us) or through our Facebook page. Just send us a message or e-mail and we will try to help in any way we can. We will also provide updates through our Facebook page and here as well as post weekly activities that you and your family can do at home, so keep an eye out for those!

To prepare for this order, we are ending our curbside pickup for library items as of 8:00 AM Monday, March 23rd. We also ask that, if possible, you do not return your items during this closure. We will not be able to empty our book drop and all due dates have been extended until we reopen.

We are saddened that we will not be able to see our patrons and provide regular services. We hope that everyone stays safe and healthy and we cannot wait to see everyone in person again.

3/19/2020 – Update

Our regional library system is amazing. The staff at the Northeast Kansas Library System have been working to make it possible for our patrons to still place holds on items and access our materials!

By the end of the day:
1. Lansing patrons can only place requests on items in the CARD CATALOG  that are owned by Lansing.
2. Patrons can only pick up requests at Lansing Community Library.

Both the Kansas Reads to Preschoolers, Winter Reading, and Storytime activities fit nicely into the ongoing 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program that we have going on. Be sure to look online to participate or pick up a sheet to log your child’s books at the library.

The Summer Reading program appears to be a huge success this year. We had 285 people reading 4080 books and 1,120 people attend the 72 programs this summer. We surpassed last year’s Summer Reading Program participation. We could not have done this without the support of our sponsors this year. The drawing for the prize baskets will be held soon and winners will be notified by phone. Keep an eye on social media and at the library for the list of basket winners. Please take a moment when you see our sponsors to thank them for their support.

We are so appreciative of the Friends hosting the Paint & Sip fundraisers that allow us to have these wonderful summer programs each year! This time our resident artist, Liz Daniel, will be leading the event and will be on Friday, September 13. The Community Center doors open at 6pm and painting starts at 6:30pm. Registration (click here or on image below) is just $40 for the event and all proceeds will go to the Friends Organization to support children’s programming. Registration will be up soon. This is a BYOB event for adults and anyone between the ages of 18 – 20 will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Friends organization will provide snacks and water for the evening.

The library recently had a long-time volunteer retire who assisted with shelving, keeping the collections straight, and helped with other projects. She is greatly missed. She volunteered about 30 hours a week at the library. Upon her retirement, we looked the current overall programming offered at the library. Over the last few years, we have added programs to build on past successes. Our next step is to incorporate additional programs in an attempt to accommodate all of our patrons. Beginning September 1, 2019, we will be offering Storytime on Friday mornings and continue our monthly Saturday Storytime and Toddler Time programs. We are adding a monthly evening Bedtime Storytime for families who are unable to attend during the day. We will also add “pop-up” programs beginning in late third quarter 2019 for a variety of ages and interests.

You can find our calendar is on our website under Activities.

See you at the library!

Upcoming Library Programming

As the Lansing Community Library comes to the end of summer and events are wrapping up, we will need to make some unexpected adjustments. The library recently had a long-time volunteer retire who assisted with shelving, keeping the collections straight, and helped with other projects. She volunteered about 30 hours a week at the library. This retirement moves up my need to evaluate the library’s programming. This evaluation is an important piece of keeping the library on track with its mission and goals and has been on my list of things to do. With the retirement of our volunteer, this evaluation now takes priority.

Over the last few years, we have added programs to build on past successes. In looking at all the programs offered at the library, I saw we have regular offerings for adults and pre-kindergarten patrons which focus on literacy and creativity. While we had an abundance of pre-kindergarten programming, what stood out was a lack of consistent programming for our school-aged patrons. With that information, I’ve decided to restructure our programming to include these age groups. We will begin offering various programs on different days, at different times, while covering different topics to encourage school-age participation.

In order to accomplish this, beginning September 1, 2019, we will only be offering Storytime on Friday mornings and continue our monthly Saturday Storytime and Toddler Time programs. We will be adding a monthly evening Storytime for families who are unable to attend during the day. We will also add “pop-up” programs beginning in late third quarter 2019 for a variety of ages and interests.

We look forward to continuing serving you and providing a wide variety of learning experiences for patrons of all ages in Lansing. Please share ideas for potential “pop-up” programs with me. I hope this realignment helps to encourage our families to visit the Lansing Community Library more often.

~Terri Wojtalewicz, twojo@lansingks.org

One Book Many Neighbors Tri-County Program

Community reading programs bring people together through a common book. As part of the adult summer reading program, seven area libraries have collaborated on a local program called One Book, Many Neighbors. We have chosen the book One World: A Global Anthology of Short Stories, which examines the many points of view of people from different cultures.

Each library has planned a program around different stories from the anthology. Participants are able to check out the book and pick up a passport to guide them to each program, where they will collect passport stamps to be eligible for a Grand Prize drawing. Participants and their families will be invited to a Summer Finale Party at Cider Hill Family Orchard, with food, prizes, apple picking and other activities. Contact your home library to join our globetrotting book club across Atchison, Leavenworth and Wyandotte Counties.

Getting the Most Out of Your Storytime

We love seeing all of the wonderful children and families at the library for storytimes because more often than not these are a child’s first “live performance” experience. Participating in a storytime is different than watching TV or a movie. At storytimes, the behavior of the audience can positively or negatively affect the program. A good audience allows the presenter to deliver the best presentation possible.

The purpose of storytime is not to teach the child how to read, but rather to encourage the love of language and literature in all its forms.  Kids listen to, observe and imitate the books and activities we share, thus building reading readiness as they grow.  Our goal is to create positive interactions with books for the parent and the child to experience together.   Storytimes are prepared with this in mind. Parents and caregivers are role models for their children and set the example for behavior.

We request that parents and caregivers follow these important etiquette guidelines to ensure a valuable and pleasant storytime experience for all.

Storytime Etiquette

  1. Please discuss proper behavior with your children before coming to the library program so they will know what is expected of them. Practice reading to them in your lap at home.
  2. Please arrive on time. Late-comers create a distraction and draw attention away from the program. Allow extra time for parking, book browsing, visiting and bathroom breaks beforehand.
  3. Snacks, drinks, and toys may be disruptive. Please put them away when you arrive at story time. Cell phones should be turned off or to vibrate.
  4. At storytime, children should sit with or near their parent/caregiver or on their lap so they will learn to focus and sit still.
  5. Adults model good library behavior for their children by being attentive, good listeners. Adults are encouraged to participate in songs and finger plays as an example for their children.
  6. Immediately after storytime, we will move to other areas for a craft and sometimes a snack.
  7. If your child becomes disruptive or fussy during the program, please remove them from the storytime area until they are comfortable, calm and ready to listen.
  8. If you feel your child is not enjoying the storytime or you must leave, please do so in the least disruptive manner.
  9. If the story time experience proves difficult for your child, a month or two in your child’s development may make a big difference in their readiness for stories. Please practice at home and try again.
